Certificate in Archaeological Sciences

Logo

Archaeology today relies upon, and is enriched by, a steadily increasing variety of scientific applications, including Geographic Information Science (GIS) and geospatial technologies, 3D and laser scanning, remote sensing, stable isotope analysis, materials science, and a variety of dating techniques, such as dendrochronology, radiocarbon, and others.

Archaeology is by nature interdisciplinary and the Certificate in Archaeological Sciences (CAS) program coordinates the archaeology curriculum of courses from across campus to expose students to the true scope of archaeology.

The certificate program also ensures students within the program interact with students with common interests majoring in anthropology, art, biology, business, classics, ecology, engineering, forestry, geography, and geology.

The program is flexible enough that students from a variety of departments and with differing backgrounds can earn the 15-semester hour certificate. Students choose one course in archaeological theory (3cr), two courses with a disciplinary focus (6cr), one practical lab or field course (3cr), and take an archaeology sciences capstone (3cr). Students who successfully complete this certificate are expected to be competent in archaeological science theory, methods, and their practical application in a laboratory or field setting.

Lab

Upon completing the certificate, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate the ability to collect, analyze, and interpret diverse datasets (e.g., material culture, environmental proxies, geospatial information) using appropriate quantitative and digital tools.
  • articulate their hands-on proficiency in field and laboratory methods, including survey, excavation, materials analysis, and geospatial techniques.
  • perform professional skills in critical thinking, teamwork, project management, and science communication, that prepares them for careers in cultural resource management, museums, government agencies, and research.

CERTIFICATE STANDARDS

Students will choose a Program of Study in consultation with the CAS Advisor and will be advised each semester to ensure timely progress through the program. The certificate is granted only to students who maintain a 3.0 GPA in all courses within their program of study to complete the certificate. Certificates are awarded only in conjunction with a baccalaureate degree conferred by the University of Georgia.

To enroll in the certificate program, you may add it in My Programs in Athena. When you have completed all the requirements, download and complete the application form: https://anthropology.uga.edu/research/labs/certificate-archaeological-sciences.

Student Organizations

Students may find other students who share their interests in the archaeological sciences by joining the Student Association for Archaeological Sciences. More information is available about the Association through the Anthropology website: https://anthropology.uga.edu/student-
