FOR INCOMING ORIENTATION STUDENTS All incoming First-Year and Transfer students will be advised at their in-person orientation session. Make sure to check out the New Student Orientation site for information about signing up for your orientation session and keep an eye on your inbox for new information. Advisors are not able to meet with incoming students or clear their registration holds before their in-person orientation session. The University of Georgia’s mandatory undergraduate academic advisement programs are an essential part of the undergraduate educational experience which empowers students to attain their academic goals. Faculty and professional academic advisors of the University of Georgia will help undergraduate students understand the options and opportunities for academic programs of study, degree requirements, and course selection. Lower Division Advising Lower-division course advising takes place in a student’s first year and involves choosing courses to complete the UGA core, as well as selecting the appropriate sequence of introductory classes for a student’s major. Lower-division advising is centralized in Franklin College’s Office of Academic Advising in 301 Brooks Hall. For First Year Students All UGA students are required to be advised every fall and spring semester. You can’t register until you’ve had your advising appointment. Make an appointment shortly after drop/add to avoid a last-minute rush that might impact your ability to register on time. If you have questions about making an appointment, email your advisor. How to Find your Advisor in SAGE Make an Appointment in SAGE If you do not have an advisor in SAGE, please email askfranklin@uga.edu. Your advisor and advising location will be assigned based on your major listed in Athena and your number of earned credit hours. To meet with the correct advisor, make sure your major is correct in Athena. (Note: Students with more than one major should be advised in each department.) How to Check and Change your Major Changing your major: If you have recently changed your major but have not been assigned a new advisor, please contact askfranklin@uga.edu. Upper Division Advising For Anthropology Majors (2nd Through 4th Year) Upper-division course advising (second through fourth years) for anthropology majors is conducted before registration begins each semester. Upper-division advising takes place in the department. Dates for the advising period will be announced each semester by your undergraduate advisor, Clark Harwell. Majors are informed that the advising period is open through our undergraduate majors email list. You may also email Clark Harwell with any questions regarding the advising process. Program progress and career outcome advising occurs from first year through fourth. Both Clark Harwell and Dr. González can help with this. As soon as you enter the program and after you have been course advised, whether by Franklin Advising or Clark, you should make a Sage appointment with Dr. González for a welcome meeting. At any point during your time in the anthropology department you can email or make Sage appointments with Dr. González whenever you want to talk about the program, your development, your future, or anything else. Course and schedule advising process proceeds as follows: Log into the SAGE advising portal to set an advising appointment with your primary advisor for the department, Clark Harwell. A list of anthropology courses to be offered in the coming semester is available on the departmental website. You should consult this list prior to advising and prepare a list of the courses you might like to take and their call numbers, ensuring that there are no time conflicts. During your advising appointment, you will go over your degree requirements and finalize your course selections for the upcoming semester. Register online through Athena. Senior majors needing a particular course to graduate — one that might already be full — can contact the professor teaching that course to request being added. Whenever possible the professor will accommodate the student. However, sometimes classroom space or the nature of the particular course makes this accommodation impossible. Students are therefore urged to satisfy all their core areas before taking their anthropology electives. If you encounter any problems during registration and need assistance, please see Clark Harwell in room 251B of Baldwin Hall. Note: Advising and registration are two separate processes. The department does the advising; the Registrar's Office, through Athena, handles registration. All students must be advised before they are allowed to register. Anyone not advised prior to the beginning of registration will have to wait until Late Registration to be advised and to register. For Honors Students Honors advisors and advising locations vary by your major in Athena and hours earned. Please refer to your SAGE network at sage.uga.edu to find your advisor’s contact information.
