Dr. Nelson recently launched an NSF-funded project focused on developing impact-based flood forecasts for the San Juan Estuary in Puerto Rico, where communities experience frequent and severe flooding. The project aims to reduce and mitigate flood risk by integrating insights from anthropology, climatology, meteorology, and engineering. The highly interdisciplinary research team advances numerical modeling of compound flooding by incorporating local knowledge, and draws on lived experiences and community visions for the future to create operational, locally relevant flood forecasts.
